I have always had a difficult relationship with my mother. I was always closer to my maternal grandmother. I have been blessed to have my grandmother be young and healthy despite her age, and I met my great grandmother before she passed in my childhood. Growing up, my mother and I lived at my grandmother’s house, and I was raised close to extended family. I am lucky to have been nurtured by so many loving women in my family.
Medicine Stories Podcast was one of the first places I heard the concept of the mother line. I’ve heard it in passing or in books but didn’t think deeply on it. On one episode, Amber and her guest talked about breaking down ancestral connections through the mother and father line. The mother line consists of your mother’s-mother’s-mother until the very first mother, a very simple concept. It was in a moment in my life when I was lonely, scared and really needed to hear this. The concept planted itself in my head to flower later.
Earth Mother Goddess by Rachel Badeau
It wasn’t long after I had a journeying experience where I meet my ancestral mother line. My motherline ancestors witnessed and supported as I gave birth to my new self. It was a powerful initiation into my womanhood after graduating from college and feeling disempowered. I was reminded that transformation is possible for us. We can all give birth to our new self.
I think everyone has something that they can learn by reconnecting to their ancestors. I encourage everyone to build a relationship with their ancestors; it adds new layers and meaning to your life. It is commonly recommended to start with your mother line or father line when starting out. Focus on whatever one you feel most drawn too in the comment and may your connection be as fruitful as mine has been.
Enjoy this week’s short but impactful read. I am mid-flare.
